Conservation of Immaterial Manorial Heritage

Notice of Conservatory Seisin for Titles in Abeyance

The Seigneury of Sames, acting as a traditional conservator of historical and manorial customs, hereby establishes a framework for the preservation of "orphan" titles. Our mission is to safeguard the historical continuity of manorial identities that have fallen into desuetude.

1. Nature of the Titles

The titles listed herein are strictly Manors in Gross.

  • Scope: This pertains solely to the ownership of the historical title.

  • Legal Restriction: This seisin conveys no ownership of land, no physical territory, and no rights of any nature over any portion of the geographical area of the Manor. It is a purely incorporeal hereditament.

2. Due Diligence and Research

Each title presented has undergone extensive historical and genealogical scrutiny. To the best of our current knowledge:

  • No living owner or legal successor has been identified.

  • No recent exercise of the Right of Escheat (reversion to the Crown or a Lord Paramount) has been recorded.

3. Wardship and Protection: The Year and a Day Rule

In accordance with the ancient maxim "Nulla Terra Sine Domino" (No land without a Lord), these titles are placed under the protective wardship and conservatory seisin of the Seigneury of Sames for a minimum period of one year and one day.

During this interval, the title is held in manu (in hand) to allow any legitimate claimant or heir to come forward.

Call for Information: Any person with knowledge of a potential holder or heir to any title listed below is requested to contact the Seigneury via our Contact Page.

4. Conveyance to a New Lord of the Manor

Upon the expiration of the conservatory period, and in the absence of a better claim, the Seigneury of Sames organizes the conveyance of the title to a new Lord of the Manor.

  • Selection Criteria: The new Lord is selected based on a specific historical or genealogical affinity for the Manor and a proven commitment to keeping its memory alive (through research, digital presence, or archival work).

  • Covenant of Non-Commerciality: The new Lord of the Manor formally commits to using the title for purely historical and patrimonial purposes. Commercial exploitation is strictly prohibited.

  • Symbolic Tenure: In keeping with the tradition of "Petty Serjeanty," the conveyance is made for a purely symbolic value (e.g., a Red Rose). This process is entirely non-mercantile.

5. Final Notice to Visitors

Every title currently displayed already has a designated future Lord of the Manor selected for its revival. This website is NOT a marketplace or a sales gallery.

“In manu dominus remanet, quousque rectus heres venerit.” (The title remains in the hand of the Lord, until the rightful heir shall appear.)

Note on Legal Status and Compliance:

In accordance with historical custom and the laws of the United Kingdom, it is hereby noted that the dignity of Lord of the Manor is a manorial lordship and constitutes an incorporeal hereditament. It is not a title of nobility, a peerage, nor a source of honour. The Seigneury of Sames strictly adheres to the Honours (Prevention of Abuses) Act 1925. No titles are offered for sale, and the symbolic conveyance of these lordships is based solely on the preservation of historical heritage and the continuity of manorial records. We do not provide, and do not claim to provide, any grant of nobility or social precedence.
